Spider Webs and Spider

Spider Webs and Spider

I noticed this spider web as I was walking along a trail. It was lit by the sunshine and the tree trunk provided a dark background which made it stand out.

If you look in the upper right corner of this photograph you can faintly see another spider web (click on the image for a larger version). The photographs below show the action going on there....

Beaver Dam Crossing

Beaver Dam Crossing

Click on an image for a larger version.

Someone put down stepping stones to help people get across this beaver dam. It used to be a trail until the beavers took over. I should have taken a photograph of it in March when we had so much rain that there was flooding in many places in the local area. At that time, several of the stepping stones were under running water. Nevertheless I crossed them to get to the Glacial Hill where a number of the photographs posted in this blog were taken.

Crossing now is fairly easy. Except for the occasional snake among the stones, the only real obstacles are the two branches that are blocking the way in the middle of the stepping stones. When the water was flowing over the dam, submerging several of the stones, it was a major inconvenience.

I thought I was learning to take pictures of swallows in flight the last time I took pictures of tree swallows flying. Then, today the barn swallows showed up in numbers. They seemed to be flying much faster. Photographing them is an entirely different challange. We'll see how I do in the coming weeks...stay tuned...

Green-winged Teal

I was walking along a trail by the edge of a beaver pond when I heard these ducks take flight. This blurry picture is all I had time to take before they were gone. The male's head, with the dark red color and an even darker stripe, identifies this as a pair of green-winged teals.
